2010 National Rural Youth Assembly
April 22-25, 2010
Institute of American Indian Art
Santa Fe, New Mexico

Congratulations once again on being selected to participate in the 2010 National Rural Youth Assembly. We are so excited that you will be joining us in Santa Fe.

Below you will find everything you need to know about traveling to Santa Fe, the hotel where we will be staying, and the Institute of American Indian Art, where the conference will be held. You will find at the end a short questionnaire which must be filled out and returned by Friday, March 26. We cannot book your travel until we receive this form! You will also find the Assembly’s Code of Conduct.

As a reminder, the National Rural Assembly, with a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, will pay for your travel, group meals, and accommodations to participate in the Rural Youth Assembly.  Incidentals such as room service, miscellaneous food and beverage, souvenirs, etc., should be covered by the individual participant.

Travel:

Air Travel
The National Rural Assembly will arrange and pay for your air travel to Santa Fe. Please do not make your own travel arrangements! We will begin this process as soon as we receive your completed questionnaire, so it is important that you send this back on time! If we have further questions regarding your travel, you will receive a call from someone at the National Rural Assembly.

You are responsible for travel to and from your home airport. We recommend that you arrive at the airport 2 hours before your flight is scheduled to depart. All flights will arrive at the Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Remember to bring your government-issued photo ID to the airport- you won’t get on the plane without it!

You will receive your flight itinerary by Friday, April 2.

Shuttle to Santa Fe
Santa Fe Valet will shuttle participants in vans directly to the hotel in Santa Fe, about an hour’s drive from Albuquerque. The shuttle will depart at 4 times throughout the day. You will receive an email by Friday, April 9 to let you know what time your shuttle departs.

Below is a map of the Baggage Claim area at the Albuquerque airport. The green arrow points to the escalator where you enter the Baggage Claim area. The blue arrow point to where you should meet the rest of the participants in your shuttle group. Please try to arrive at that area 10 minutes before the shuttle is scheduled to depart in case you have trouble locating the shuttle.

Travel Issues
At any time during your travel, if you run into any problems such as missing your originating or connecting flight or any delays, don’t panic! Call a National Rural Assembly staff person to inform them of your situation, and we will assist you in rearranging your travel.  We will send you a list of contact numbers shortly.

The National Rural Youth Assembly will be held at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) campus in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  IAIA is located in one of the most diverse concentrations of Native peoples in North America, in the heart of the nation’s oldest multicultural community and in one of the largest Native art markets in the country. The IAIA College of Contemporary Native Arts serves Indigenous students from across North America and the world, offering a unique cultural exchange within the student learning environment. In any given year, there may be up to 112 different tribes represented within the student body.

Two and four-year degrees are available in the areas of Museum Studies, Studio Arts, Creative Writing, New Media Arts, and Indigenous Liberal Studies.  Santa Fe

With a population of 70,000 primarily Hispanic, Anglo and Native American people, Santa Fe New Mexico's fourth largest city behind Albuquerque, Las Cruces and Rio Rancho. Situated at 7,000 feet in the foothills of the southern Rocky Mountains, it was founded between 1607 and 1610, making it the second oldest city as well as the highest and oldest capital in the U.S. In 1912, it officially achieved statehood and today its unique offerings of art, culture and ancient traditions make it a world-class tourist destination, drawing more than 1 million visitors each year. In 2005, Santa Fe became the first U.S. city to be chosen by UNESCO as a Creative City, one of only nine cities in the world to hold this designation.

Santa Fe's high altitude means air is thinner. It usually takes about 48 hours to adjust and staying hydrated helps. The average temperatures for April are 67°F for a high and 37°F for a low, so be sure to dress accordingly.
